Our homeschool courses are designed by scientists and educators to supplement homeschool science curricula through fun, hands-on science experiments and activities. A minimum of 6 participants is required for each course.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to several requests by parents and students, we have made the decision to more strictly adhere to the minimum age for each course. Students must be the minimum age indicated for a course in order to enroll. Hopefully we have enough options for each age group to satisfy your child's science interests.

SPRING 2018 HOMESCHOOL WORKSHOPS - MIDDLE SCHOOL (AGES 10-14)

Applied Physics Lab: Suminagashi Art - Friday, April 27  10:00am-12:00pm

Ages 10-14
Learn about surface tension and create beautiful works of art with the Japanese art of suminagashi! **Wear clothes appropriate to paint in.

Chemistry Lab: Stoichiometry - Wednesday, May 2 10:00am-11:30am

Ages 10-14

Students are introduced to stoichiometry with a limiting reagent demonstration, learn to use stoichiometry to predict the mass or volume of reaction products, and experiment by decomposing sodium bicarbonate and reacting sodium bicarbonate with hydrochloric acid.

Chemistry Lab: Acids and Bases - Wednesday, May 9 10:00am-11:30am
Ages 10-14

In this lab, students use indicators to test for acids and bases, combine acids with metals and carbonates to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide gas, and titrate vinegar to determine the molar concentration of acetic acid. They also perform the classic test for hydrogen gas using a burning splint.

Chemistry Lab: Measuring pH - Wednesday, May 16 10:00am-11:30am
Ages 10-14

Students learn about pH and the use of red and blue litmus paper, universal pH paper, and common liquid indicators, such as methyl red, bromthymol blue, and phenolphthalein. Students determine the pH of known and unknown acids and bases, measure the pH of various household products, and demonstrate that carbon dioxide in water is acidic.

Applied Physics Lab: Muscle and Bone - Friday, May 18  10:00am-12:00pm

Ages 10-14
Together we break chicken bones by applying a load until we reach a fracture point. In teams, students design either a splint or a cast to mend the broken bones. Once set, designs are tested by applying the previous load. As biomedical engineers in training, students study devices used in the recovery of a strained muscles. Teams engineer their own designed device to help an injured bicep bend with a mechanical advantage.

SPRING 2018 HOMESCHOOL WORKSHOPS - MIDDLE SCHOOL (AGES 10-14)

Middle School Microbiology with Labs
Mondays,  Jan 22-Apr 23 (11 weeks; no class Feb 19, Mar 12 or Apr 2)
9:30am-12:00pm
Ages 10-14
Did you know that the latest study suggests that you are 10% human and 90% microbial? In this course, we explore the 100 trillion microbes on and in your body, use proper sterilization technique to culture bacteria, yeast, and mold, and grow fungi to understand the fermentation process. Students investigate the relationship between the microbes in soil, on your food and in your gut, learn about microbial citizen science projects, and properly use microscopes to discover the tiny, beautiful and even bioluminescent organisms all around us. Course fees include all lab costs.

Building ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles)

Mondays,  Jan 22-Apr 23 (11 weeks; no class Feb 19, Mar 12 or Apr 2)

12:15pm-1:30pm

Ages 10-14
During this course, students work in teams to build and test two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs): our SeaPerches (underwater ROVs) and  our quadcopter drones (flying ROVs). Students learn about circuits and how to solder, explore hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, and troubleshoot any problems.

Middle School Applied Chemistry with Labs
Wednesdays, Jan 24-Apr 25 (no class Feb 21 or Apr 4)
9:30am-12:00pm
Ages 10-14
Chemistry is used in all aspects of our lives. In this course, students explore the process of oxidation reduction by harnessing energy in a battery, learn about organic chemistry through carbon and hydrogen, and experiment with gas laws by testing relationships of pressure and temperature. We discover how chemistry impacts our world and applies to other natural sciences like forensics and geology. Some chemistry background is beneficial. Feel free to direct questions regarding your child's readiness for this course to rebekah@discoversciencecenter.com. Course fees include all lab costs.
